Meet the Expert – Murray Thornhill, HHG Legal Group

Thanks for being with us today Murray.

First of all, tell us about your legal career so far?

I head up the commercial and litigation division of HHG Legal Group. I was admitted as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of WA and the Federal and High Courts in 1998 having worked in various law clerk roles before that. My background involves working for a leading boutique litigation firm, a top tier national firm and a regional practice.

I present at a variety of seminars for the firm and for clients, as well as external legal education bodies, and I have contributed to various legal publications. I oversee HHG staff training, including CPD and the firm’s Quality Practice certification. I am a member of the Law Society of WA Quality Practice Standards Committee. I am involved with training programs for organisations, like the Master Builders Association, Civil Contractors Federation and a member of the Law Council of Australia Business Law & Litigation Sections.  I am also a Fellow of the Australian & New Zealand College of Notaries, a member of the Society of Construction Law and a member of the Australian and New Zealand Education Law Association. For many years, I have also advised charities, school associations, principals, board members and other non-profit bodies.

I am listed as a recommended lawyer in WA in Doyle’s Guide.  My firm has won many awards for our work including our pro bono and charity work.

Tell us a little more about the area of law that you specialise?

Since 2003, I have developed and lead HHG’s success in dispute resolution and commercial law, focusing on construction, insolvency, employment, small to medium businesses, local government and trusts and estate matters. I have represented clients in most Courts and tribunals in WA and the Federal and High Courts.  Basically, if there is a business problem or issue, I can deal with it and provide sound and practical advice.

Are there any common issues that you come across when consulting with businesses?

There is always need for pro-active and strategic advice across legal, tax, asset protection, employment, governance and strategy.  These areas are rarely co-ordinated but can be delivered so well when advisers and pro-active clients, get together.

Businesses need a trusted, long term legal adviser to be on the journey with them.

Finally, particularly in dispute resolution cases, when and how would you recommend businesses consult a legal professional? (ie -obviously it depends on the case but is it best to consult a professional before it goes too far?)

Do your research, ask for advice from trusted business leaders who have used lawyers, make sure the lawyer has the skills and experience but also has a team of size and quality behind them.  Look for a creative team of problem solvers, like HHG.  Do not be afraid to ask for an initial meeting, free of charge, to ensure you are comfortable and can trust the team you are engaging.

The best thing is that SW Leaders has done all of this for you and more already!
